Calle de Europa

Nueva España

Named after the European continent, which tradition traces back to Europa, the Phoenician princess of Greek myth.

The name points to the whole continent, Europe, and at the same time to the girl who lent it the word. Greek tradition tells of her as the daughter of Agenor, king of Phoenicia: Zeus was smitten with her, disguised himself as a white and gentle bull, let her climb onto his back on the shore and plunged into the sea bound for Crete. From that crossing from the Phoenician east toward the west came, according to the ancients, the name now borne by lands, institutions and this street in Chamartín. The street belongs to the Nueva España neighbourhood, one of the residential areas that took shape when Chamartín was joined to Madrid. What remains is the geographical name, sober among the neighbouring streets that also look to the map.
