Calle de Conde de Torralba

Castilla

It recalls the title of Count of Torralva, whose first holder was mayor of Madrid in the mid-seventeenth century.

The name points to a noble title, the county of Torralva, which Philip IV granted in 1640 to Íñigo Fernández de Córdoba y Mendoza. The name comes not from any person but from a farmstead in Jaén, in the present-day municipality of Villatorres, which jumped to the coat of arms and, centuries later, to the streets of Madrid. That first count was a knight of Alcántara and of Santiago and, above all, mayor of Madrid between 1649 and 1650, which explains why his title fit among names tied to power. It is not documented which of the counts of Torralva the city meant to honor, since the title passed through several generations. Today it is a short street in the San Cristóbal colony, far from the fords of Jaén that gave that first count his name.
