Delicias

Recalls the devotion to the Holy Christ of the Path, a crucified figure venerated in the Delicias neighbourhood and known as the Christ of the Railwaymen.

The name comes from a devotion to the crucified Christ deeply rooted in Delicias: the Holy Christ of the Path, a carving kept in the parish of Nuestra Señora de las Delicias. The image carries a second nickname that gives away the character of the neighbourhood: the Christ of the Railwaymen. Delicias grew up against the Atocha and Delicias stations, and a whole community of railway workers lived here. In 1970 Renfe handed over a plot to build the parish that would serve that community, and the devotion has been marked by the tracks ever since. The cross from which the image hangs rests on iron rails donated by the railwaymen themselves, and the interior Stations of the Cross were mounted on sleepers and railway track. In September 1999 the neighbours founded the brotherhood of the Christ of the Path to carry it through the streets. Every Holy Monday, at dusk, the image travels the neighbourhood and passes along streets such as Batalla del Salado.
